The word "tartan" originates from the Scottish Gaelic word "breacan" and is indicative of a crisscross-patterned cloth with horizontal and vertical bands of various colors running throughout. Originally made of wool, tartan fabrics can now be found in just about any material imaginable, and you can now find tartan suspenders available right here at SuspenderStore. The distinctive tartan patterns are almost always associated with a clan or community, and often the pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. However, there's no need for membership in a certain clan to enjoy the enduring appeal of plaid tartan suspenders; anyone and everyone can create all sorts of traditional and unique outfits with this style of suspenders.

We offer two of the most popular of types of tartan suspenders for your wearing pleasure: Black Watch and Royal Stewart. Each style has its own distinctive color combination and pattern, making them both a must-have item if you love wearing plaid. These non-stretch cotton suspenders are designed with an X-back with leather crosspatch. They also include a bit of lower elastic for a modest amount of give. The suspenders sport nickel clips on a leather drop and have polished nickel size adjusters for the perfect fit. Please note that the Black Watch suspenders have black leather trim, while Royal Stewart tartan suspenders feature brown leather trim. Both styles are available in 46-inch and 54-inch lengths. Suspender sizes indicate the length of the suspender straps in inches from the end of the attachment point in the front past the cross patch on the back to the tip of the attachment point on the back.

How to Measure

The most accurate way to determine the correct suspender size is to use a tape measure on the person who will be wearing the suspenders as shown in the image below:

Once you have this measurement, round up to the next size suspender, since the suspender size indicates the length of the straps fully extended and the suspenders can be shortened, not lengthened.

Note: If the measurement is very close to a suspender size and you prefer the adjusters to fall high on the torso, order the next size up. For example, if you measure 41 inches, the adjusters on a 42-inch suspender will fall about 1 inch above the waistband of the pants or skirt, whereas those of a 48-inch suspender will fall about 7 inches above the waistband. This is simply a matter of personal preference.
