There's a whole world of information to be learned regarding plaids, checks and tartans. Both checks and tartans fall under the heading "plaid," which can describe almost any pattern that has a crisscross pattern. A tartan, however, will almost always have a community associated with it, and the pattern often has numerous colors and shades contributing to its uniqueness. Many tartans are registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans, as are Royal Stewart and Black Watch, the two tartan patterns we offer in our classic tartan braces.

Black Watch. These are gorgeous blue and green tartan plaid suspenders featuring a pattern that reminds you of the beauty of the Scottish Highlands and ancient castles overlooking crystal-blue waters.

Royal Stewart. This vibrant red plaid pattern is one of the most recognized in the world. It's a popular choice for kilts, capes, skirts, shirts and even leggings, and now you can enjoy it on high-quality suspenders.

Tartan suspenders can be worn with casual and dressy outfits, and they look great on anyone. Both tartan patterns are designed with 1 3/8-inch straps and a Y-back with lower elastic, offering enough stretch for a comfortable fit. Polished nickel size adjusters allow for fine-tuning the length, and the braces are finished with genuine leather button attachments.

The Black Watch suspenders have black leather trim while the Royal Stewart suspenders have a beautiful brown trim. We offer these in two sizes: a 46-inch length to fit most average builds between 5'2"-6'1" tall, and a 54-inch length to fit most between 6'1"-6'5". Prefer clip-on styles? Suspender sizes indicate the length of the suspender straps in inches from the end of the attachment point in the front past the cross patch on the back to the tip of the attachment point on the back.

How to Measure

The most accurate way to determine the correct suspender size is to use a tape measure on the person who will be wearing the suspenders as shown in the image below:

Once you have this measurement, round up to the next size suspender, since the suspender size indicates the length of the straps fully extended and the suspenders can be shortened, not lengthened.

Note: If the measurement is very close to a suspender size and you prefer the adjusters to fall high on the torso, order the next size up. For example, if you measure 41 inches, the adjusters on a 42-inch suspender will fall about 1 inch above the waistband of the pants or skirt, whereas those of a 48-inch suspender will fall about 7 inches above the waistband. This is simply a matter of personal preference.
